LakeHouse Arts: Era and the Kaitiaki

Song! Dance! Puppets! Masks! Recycling! A musical theatre show for the whole family. “Era and the Kaitiaki” is an award winning 40 minute family outdoor theatre show about helping nature create a world our children’s children can enjoy.

The show, created by long-time theatre creator Grae Burton, follows the story of Era, a young girl with a big imagination, who meets the guardian of a special tree and together they save the world (well, the world around here).

This 15th anniversary production will premiere the brand-new outdoor pavilion and performance space at Lake House Arts Centre, in Takapuna, and will be the first theatre show to hit the stage post-lockdown. In the new Traffic Light System audiences will be able to enjoy the spaced outdoor audience area. Burton, who is also the Kaiwhakahaere for Lake House Arts says, “We have created a safe, accessible outdoor environment for whole families to enjoy theatre during Summer Traffic Lights.” The show will perform in the week leading up to Christmas and through the Christmas, New Year period. “We hope to offer those families, who are missing outdoor events this summer, and who have chosen not to cross the border for their holidays a show to make their break a special one.”

The vibrant cast of actors are made up of local talent, Alex Medland, Geoff Allen, Marion Prebble, Denise Snoad and Molly Dimond. An energetic blend of performers who together, bring this story to life.

Created with CNZ Funding, ‘‘Era and the Kaitiaki’ has toured the top of the South Island — won the Nelson/Tasman Environment Award 2003, with the current version revised and restaged by Court Theatre 2006.

As well as being a playful, lively show, Era has strong messages of recycling and looking after the environment.
