Celebrate Winter at Takapuna Winter Lights!
The Takapuna community will come together to brighten two nights this July at the spectacular Takapuna Winter Lights festival as part of the Elemental AKL festival. The all-ages outdoor sensory experience is a free event in the heart of Takapuna that will bring communities and families together and is expected to become an annual highlight on the Takapuna arts and cultural calendar.
Visitors from far and wide will get the chance to experience Takapuna like never-before with illuminated art, music and performances from some of New Zealand’s best renowned creative talents as they band together to launch a cornerstone arts and culture event right in the heart of Takapuna.
One of the country’s leading light artists Angus Muir (AMD) is excited to be headlining this year’s festival. ‘AMD jumped at the chance to be part of Takapuna Winter Lights 2021,’ says Angus. ‘We have plans to completely transform Hurstmere Green across the two days and are excited to showcase a selection of our world-leading light installations.’
Also part of this year’s line-up is Vospertron – globally-acclaimed performance artist; SILO – the creative team behind the award-winning LUMA sensory journey in Queenstown; and some amazing local talent including DJ Karn Hall. Combined, they will bring mid-winter Takapuna to life with an awe-inspiring family-friendly experience to blow the mind.
After a year of uncertainty for the Takapuna business community, Takapuna Beach Business Association CEO Terence Harpur is delighted to be hosting the event. ‘It’s been a really tough year for businesses and a free, fun event like this will lift spirits and showcase Takapuna’ says Terence. ‘We want people to come in and check out Takapuna at night, get awed by some fantastic pieces of art and see something really special. Putting on this free event is a fantastic way to thank the community for their support over the past year as well as support local bars & restaurants, many of whom are already gearing up for Takapuna Winter Lights 2021.’
Takapuna Winter Lights is part of the Elemental AKL festival, a captivating programme of more than 30 free and ticketed events celebrating the culture, cuisine and creativity of Auckland.’¯’¯From July 14 to August 1, Elemental AKL events will transform eateries and bars, theatres and public spaces across Auckland into hubs of exciting experiences.’¯Elemental AKL is delivered by Auckland Unlimited, Auckland’s economic and cultural agency.
Businesses are encouraged to get involved with Takapuna Winter Lights over the weekend of 30-31 July by putting on their own event to complement the festival through live music, performance or visual arts, and can find out more by contacting the Takapuna Beach Business Association.
Takapuna Winter Lights will be held at Takapuna’s Hurstmere Green, 30-31 July 2021 and is proudly brought to you by the Takapuna Beach Business Association, SILO, AMD, Go Media, Devonport Takapuna Local Board and Auckland Unlimited. Lights are on from 5-10pm, so dress up warm, pop in for a bite & drink at your favourite restaurants and bars and let your senses guide you through Takapuna Winter Lights 2021.
