The PumpHouse Theatre is located in Killarney Park on the shore of Lake Pupuke in Takapuna, Auckland.
Formerly a water pumping station that from 1905 supplied Lake Pupuke water to North Shore’s early settlers, in 1983 it was listed as a Category II Historic Building under the protection of The New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
In the 1970s the buildings were saved from demolition by local residents then converted into a theatre and arts centre. In the early 1990s, an Amphitheatre was added to the complex behind the cafe enabling outdoor productions to be performed in summer.
The PumpHouse operates as a programmed venue for hire for the performing arts and other types of staged events with a strong focus on encouraging community participation in the performing arts.
The theatre calendar offers diverse fare, ranging from plays, musicals, dance, traditional outdoor Summer Shakespeare, stand-up comedy and concerts to psychic mediums, book launches, seminars, workshops, poetry and play readings.
The French Rendez-vous Cafe at The PumpHouse is Auckland’s only lakeside restaurant. French chefs and staff serve classic and casual French fare to a busy lunch time crowd as well as servicing evening diners and theatre patrons. The cafe can be booked for functions. Bookings are essential for dinner.
